Chiune Sugihara (1900–1986), japoński dyplomata i szpieg, pełniąc funkcję konsula Cesarstwa Japonii w Kownie, latem 1940 r., w ostatnich tygodniach istnienia niepodległej Republiki Litewskiej wydał kilku tysiącom Żydów, głównie uchodźcom z Polski, wizy tranzytowe, umożliwiające im przejazd przez Japonię w drodze na holenderską wyspę Curaçao na Karaibach. Była to fikcja – w rzeczywistości nikt nie dotarł na Curaçao, a większość uratowanych Żydów znalazła ostatecznie schronienie w Japonii, szanghajskim gettcie, Australii czy Nowej Zelandii. W dyplomatycznej akcji ratunkowej swoją rolę odegrali również Holendrzy i Polacy. Urzędnik sprzymierzonej z Niemcami Japonii, ratujący Żydów? Sowieci godzący się na ich przejazd przez Syberię? The history of the Holocaust has its roots outside Europe. Zofia Hartman's work tells the story of one such thread. Chiune Sugihara (1900–1986), a Japanese diplomat and spy, serving as consul of the Empire of Japan in Kaunas, in the summer of 1940, in the last weeks of the independent Republic of Lithuania, issued several thousand Jews, mainly refugees from Poland, transit visas enabling them to travel through Japan on their way to the Dutch island of Curaçao in the Caribbean. It was a fiction – in reality, no one was going to Curaçao, and most of the Jews who were saved eventually found refuge in Japan, the Shanghai ghetto, Australia, or New Zealand. The Dutch and Poles also played a role in the diplomatic rescue operation. An official of Japan, allied with Germany, saving Jews? The Soviets agreeing to let them pass through Siberia? Sugihara's story is mysterious and not yet fully understood. The author shows how it has been received and how ambiguous it is. And it seems that the process of Sugihara's assimilation into the social consciousness.
